On
February 1, 2001, a random selection of 100 names was drawn from those currently
receiving services from the San Diego Regional Center. Thirty names were then
randomly selected using the following variables:
Three age groups (ages 3-17; 18-30; 31 and older)
Geographical representation (proportional representation from the geographic
areas served by the SDRC: North County, Main Center, South Bay, East County
and Imperial County.
The target sub-committee also wanted to select a culturally diverse group
of individuals representing a range of disabilities. Through the random selection
process, this was accomplished with no further changes made to the 30 names
randomly selected
All 30 of the randomly selected consumers were contacted and invited to participate
in the project. Nine of the 30 declined to participate. Most said they liked
their life the way it currently was and decided not to be part of the pilot.
(That sounds like self-determination in action!) A few moved out of the area
and could not be a part of the pilot. Nine names were redrawn from the original
pool of 100 to replace those individuals, matching age and geographic representation.
