FAQ #9: What is a Service Broker?

A service broker is a person who works for YOU! They do not work for the Regional Center or a service provider agency. In this project, we will have several brokers (people) you can choose from to help you. You don’t have to have a broker; however, they can be very helpful. Some of the things a broker helps people with include:

A broker can assist you in defining or spelling out what support needs and life dreams you have. A broker can provide you with information about options and resources, so you can make decisions about the help you want/need.

Brokers can help you find potential service providers, as well as generic community supports. They can assist you by arranging/contracting for services and/or supports, and they can assist you in ongoing evaluation of your decisions in your plan and help you with other consultations.

The broker will work with you and your family or friends (we call it your support network) and will ask you what kinds of things you need in your life to be safe and live life the way you want.
The broker will talk to people for you, if you want them to. Maybe you want to keep going to your day program, but not everyday - they can talk with the contact person for your day program and help create a schedule that fits your needs.

Brokers can look for any special services that you might need in your community. Maybe you are interested in learning something unique. The broker can see what is available in your community and help you get a brand new source of help!

Each broker has received a lot of training in how to work with people and help them find and receive what they want. The San Diego Project requires all interested brokers to pass an intensive training course given by experts in this area. As a result of this training:
