More Information About the Project

nation Project began with thirty individuals randomly selected to represent the diversity of individuals receiving services from the San Diego Regional Center.

Participation in the project is voluntary. Participants also have the option if they so desire to use a Service Broker for the design and development of the Self-Determination Plan and a Fiscal Intermediary to handle the money involved in implementing a plan.

If the consumer/family desires to use a Service Broker, they select one from a list of six brokers. The Service Broker meets with the consumer/family getting to know their wants, needs and dreams. Together they design and develop a Self-Determination Plan and accompanying budget. The Service Broker researches communities resources and identifies resources appropriate for the plan.

Once the plan has been written, it is submitted to the San Diego Regional Center for review and approval of items in the plan that involve expenditures of San Diego Regional Center funds.

After the San Diego Regional Center has reviewed and approved the proposed budget, monies are distributed, usually through a fiscal intermediary, to purchase services or to buy equipment identified in the plan. The consumer/family can amend the plan and budget as they identify new needs and dreams.

There are currently six Service Brokers who have completed training, are certified and are currently working with consumers and their families. Access biographies of the service brokers at http://www.mosaiclink.org/Planners.htm.

Education and distributing information on Self-Determination is an important aspect of this project. The "My Life.....My Way" Self-Determination conference held at the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center in San Diego at the beginning of April, 2002 highlighted our educational efforts and was well received.

The Second Self-Determination Conference was held on Thursday, November 20 and Friday, November 21, 2003 at the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley in San Diego, California. For more information on the conference, please click the Self-Determination conference button.
